PRESS RELEASE: Tibetan Uprising Movement Mobilizes in Chicago

For Immediate Release
Tibetan Uprising Movement Mobilizing in Chicago
March 10, 2008

Contact: Contact: Hilary Edwards, Students for a Free Tibet, 608-852-4698 (cell)

Chicago, IL - Tibetans and their supporters from Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, and Michigan will mark the 49th anniversary of the 1959 National Uprising against China's occupation of Tibet on March 10th with a march beginning at Water Tower Place at 10:30am.

Hundreds of marchers and 10 15-foot-tall Tibetan puppets will transverse Michigan Avenue and will then proceed to China's Consulate (100 West Erie) where they will stage a massive demonstration starting at 12pm.

Accompanying the walkers will be giant puppets designed to look like famous Tibetan Freedom Fighters. In India today (March 10), Tibetans launched a historic march to return to occupied Tibet. The puppets in Chicago will represent the actual Tibetans returning to Tibet.

"We stand here to project what Tibetans in Tibet are not allowed to express, which is to regain their basic human rights," said Pema Rinzin, President- Tibetan Alliance of Chicago.

This action is also designed to demonstrate strong solidarity and support for the Tibetan People's Uprising Movement and to shine the Olympic spotlight on China's ongoing occupation of Tibet and worsening human rights record.

According to Tenzin Tsetan, Chapter Coordinator of Madison Students for a Free Tibet, "We Tibetans stand unified worldwide against China's illegal occupation of our homeland and for human rights throughout China. The human rights conditions are worsening in this time prior to the Olympics, and the world community must hold China accountable."

"Independence is the only solution for Tibet. Throughout the world on March 10th, Tibetans and their supporters are standing up once again to express their commitment to this outcome," stated Professor Larry Gerstein, President-International Tibet Independence Movement.

This event is organized by the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago, Wisconsin Tibetan Association, Students for a Free Tibet, International Tibet Independence Movement, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress-Minnesota, and TIBETMichigan.

Crunch Time For U.S. War Resisters In Canada

When Private Jeremy Hinzman crossed the border into Canada in January 2004, he became the first AWOL GI to seek refugee status there. The U.S. Army had denied his request to serve in a non-combat role as a Conscientious Objector. They forced him into a tour in Afghanistan, and then ordered him to deploy to Iraq. Four years after fleeing the country, Hinzman, his wife and one-year-old son are facing the possibility of deportation back to the United States.
