AFL-CIO gets dissident labor journalist kicked out of hotel as 'security risk'

Labor journalist Harry Kelber, who has covered AFL-CIO conventions and Executive Council meetings for more than twenty years, was denied a room at the Drake Hotel because of a pamphlet he wrote calling for greater union democracy. The AFL-CIO persuaded Drake management to deny Kelber accommodations because he posed a “security risk.”

$9.6 million Russ case award - Jury says CPD at fault in NU students shooting

Jury says police at fault in NU football player's shooting
The jury took 3 1/2 days to reach a verdict in the monthlong civil trial, concluding that Officer Van Watts IV acted "willfully and wantonly" in Russ' death. The Northwestern student, two weeks away from graduation, was shot in the chest after a police pursuit ended when Russ' car spun out on the Dan Ryan Expressway about 1 a.m. on June 5, 1999.
