Chicago Animal Rights Activists take it to the Streets: Wachovia Securities, "Stop killing animals!"

[
permalink]In what was billed as
“June Justice,” animal rights activists, in international solidarity with the
SHAC 7, protested the torture and murder of laboratory test animals at Huntingdon Life Sciences. The Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty or SHAC campaign is an international effort to shut down Huntingdon Life Sciences, Europe's largest contract research organization, which has gained international notoriety for its
animal cruelty and
bad science.
Chicago animal rights activists were not to be counted out as they stood outside the offices of Wachovia Securities at 30 S. Wacker and 77 W. Wacker baring signs that read “Wachovia Securities Kills Puppies” and “Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty” with images of vivisected animals

Why Wachovia? Wachovia Securities has shares of GlaxoSmithKline, which is a client of HLS. Robert Ingram, who sits on the board of directors for Wachovia Securities, also happens to be the vice president for GSK. Animal rights activists are demanding that Robert Ingram be removed from the board of directors and that Wachovia Securities sell all of its shares in GSK. Until this happens, protesters have stated they will continue their pressure campaign.
Part of the SHAC campaign involves a divestment strategy to eliminate support for HLS, which has been successful enough to drive the lab 80 million dollars into debt, run its share price into the ground, get it kicked off both the New York and London stock exchanges and
convince hundreds of institutions around the world to sever their relationships with the lab.

AKBAYAN (Citizens' Action Party)
8 July 2005
AKBAYAN Party today said that the speech made by the President last night announcing that she will not resign and will push instead for major constitutional reforms indicates that "house is already burning." Akbayan also called the speech of the President, which called for the resignation of all Cabinet members, as a feeble pitch to preempt the expected withdrawal of support from key Cabinet officials.

"If you bomb our cities," Osama bin Laden said in a recent videotape, "we will bomb yours."' It was clear Britain would be a target ever since British Prime Minister Tony Blair decided to join President Bush's "war on terror" and his invasion of Iraq. We had, as they say, been warned. The G-8 summit was obviously chosen, well in advance, as Attack Day.

The Price of Occupation

Tariq Ali - The Guardian, UK
During the last phase of the Troubles, the IRA targeted mainland Britain: it came close to blowing up Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet in Brighton. Some years later a missile was fired at No 10. London's financial quarter was also targeted. There was no secret as to the identity of the organisation that carried out the hits or its demands. And all this happened despite the various Prevention of Terrorism Acts passed by the Commons.
