Canvass for Prisoner Rights this Weekend!!
Please join us for canvassing in target districts this weekend in connection with passing HB2633 in the Illinois house. HB2633 is the Tamms Accountability Act and would ensure oversight at Tamms Detention Center, a "supermax" all solitary confinement prison in southern IL.
Tamms supermax prison was built for temporary added punishment for prisoners already in the prison system. But 30% of the first prisoners placed there when it opened in 1998 are still there. All prisoners are kept in permanent solitary confinement, with no human touch, no communal activities, no phone calls, no programs. These conditions are known to cause mental deterioration and/or trigger psychiatric problems not previously present in prisoners. Attorney General Eric Holder has described these conditions at Guantanamo as too isolating for prisoner safety. Take a stand to help end human rights abuses in Illinois!
Come canvas with us in target districts. We will go door to door to get support for HB2633 (which establishes standards for who goes to Tamms and for how long) and to gather signatures on our petition.
