Coroner's Report Says "Homocide" – Yesterday's Protest Against Police Killing of Larnester Hull

Over 100 community residents held a press conference followed by a march through the community on Chicago's West Side to protest the Monday night police shooting of 34-year-old Larnester Hull, father of five, in the back of the head by an off-duty Chicago police officer.

Both the deceased and the officer lived on the same block (the Tribune erroneously listed Hull's residence as Bellwood, IL) and had previous run-in's. The family reported that the Cook County Medical Examiner listed the cause of death as "homocide."

"Make no mistake about it," said Mark Carter, one of the protest leaders. "The Chicago Police do not like black people. It doesn't matter if they're [the police] white, black or whatever, they're all blue. They're police. This is the USA, and they're still killing black people."

"They blew my daddy away 38 years ago, in 1969," said Chairman Fred Hampton, Jr. of the Prisoners Of Conscience Committee, son of the Black Panther Party leader who was murdered in his sleep by Chicago Police. "They say this isn't going on anymore. If we don't organize, we commit suicide. No one's going to save us but us."

Holding one of Hull's young children, his older brother Wallace Lagrone yelled at police, "Will you be in this community now to take care of this child? Are you going to take care of his kids?"

Besides the alley where he died, blood was also splattered on a piece of cardboard. After they took Hull's body away, the police did nothing to clean up the scene of the killing, leaving the bloodied piece of cardboard for community members of all ages to see.

Re: Coroner's Report Says "Homocide" – Yesterday's Protest Against Police Killing of Larnester Hull

Here is the bottom line. If police cannot apprehend a suspect without anyone getting injured, or worse, killed, then they should not attempt to do so. their job is to serve and protect. not kill people, even if they are armed with a gun and trying to kill the cop. if it reaches that point the cops should retreat. I dont want to hear the argument Larnester was armed, fleeing from, and didnt stop when police told him to. If they really wanted to catch him they should have called additional cops in and contained the area and then negotiated. as far as the cops getting injured- that is their fault and their job.

Chicago Police fatally shot an armed Bellwood man late Monday in a Humboldt Park alley following a foot chase on the West Side.

Larnester Hull, 34, of the 200 block of Zuelke Dr. in Bellwood, was shot on the 800 block of N. Homan Ave. and pronounced dead on the scene at 11:35 p.m., officials said.

Hull died of a gunshot wound to the neck, the medical examiner's office said.

Two police officers also suffered minor injuries in the incident. It is not clear how they were injured, but they were not shot, police said.

Officers from the Gang Unit became involved in a foot chase with the armed man in the 800 block of North Homan Avenue about 10:30 p.m., police said. When police attempted to arrest the man, a struggle ensued and an officer shot his gun at the offender, striking and killing him, police said.

Harrison District police said no suspects are being sought in the incident.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority on Tuesday, according to IPRA spokesman Mark Payne, who said a gun was recovered at the scene.

Harrison Area detectives are also investigating.
