The annual Matthew Shepard March memorializes the 1998 lynching of gay Wyoming student Matthew Shepard that came to symbolize the vicious hatred and violence that many Americans still harbor against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people.

PITTSBURGH, Sep 20 (IPS) - As media and government delegates prepare for the G20 Summit to be held Sep. 24-25 in Pittsburgh, local business and activist groups are promoting clashing visions of days to come.

The venom and vile the spews forth from America’s body politic is endemic of a people infected with fear and prejudice; but this learned hatred of a democratic agenda is not one based primarily on racism—yet hostility and resentment is very much its spirit. Rather this anima of animosity is one that seeks scapegoats for any instability felt or imagined of America’s middle and lower class realities, and all presumptions of a relatively naïve and misinformed society.

On October 5, the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance (NCNR), along with other national peace groups, will carry out direct action at the White House to end the war in Afghanistan and demand reparations for the people of Afghanistan.

It would serve the public interest best if the John Day Basin Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement was rendered not worthy of further consideration and set aside in the same way as its nasty sister, the Western Oregon Plan Revisions.

As designated managers of our precious public lands the Bureau Of Land Management has a responsibility to provide the public with the highest quality of service possible. That is certainly not happening here.

A three-month old baby in Louisiana died in her home from blood loss due to rat bites. There were holes in the walls and holes in the floor. Evidently, the landlord spent FEMA money earmarked to repair the house on something else, but the authorities were still trying to determine if they should file criminal charges against the parents!
