Skokie Cabbies Organize for Their Rights

Beginning November 1, 2007 a Skokie ordinance will come into effect causing every cab driver in the village to find other work or leave the village.
The new ordinance makes it effectively illegal to be a working man in the Village of Skokie. All taxicabs will now need to be parked in a closed garage or face a $35.00 fine per day.

Local cabbies have organized themselves to fight city hall, while knowing there could never be a legal challenge, the Supreme Court has already been heard, they have realized their only hope to practice their livelihood is to challenge the ordinance by seeking solidarity with other working people that have been effected by a ten year old ordinance that makes it illegal to have a work truck on a village street or private property.

At the last Village Board meeting only three citizens were allowed to speak, the first said out the Village Boards "Cultural sensitivity is only surpassed by its cultural diversity," pointing out that eleven white people were running the village.

Another speaker also spoke of how over 100 customers that are differently abled would not be able to get a timely service if he had to walk over a mile to his cab each time he was dispatched.

Still another brought up the security of the Village Boards proposed cabbie parking lot by the end of the "yellow line" and that being a cabbie is the most dangerous job in the United States.

The Taxi Drivers have decided to Unite with other working class people and groups that are effected by the ordinance and demand that they be allowed to park on the streets in front of their home, and that all commercial light trucks be allowed to park on their own private property.

The group of cab drivers and their allies have announced a day of action on Monday October 15th, and ask all that can to be at the Village Hall, 6100 W. Oakton at 6:30 pm to deliver their demands.
