An update from Jamie Kalven ("What are they hiding"?)

Friends,

In the aftermath of Judge Lefkow's ruling that Chicago Police Department documents I am seeking are public, controversy over the City's efforts to
keep them secret has continued.

Confronted with headlines such as "What Are They Hiding?" (Chicago Sun-Times), Mayor Daley's chief lawyer gave members of the City Council copies of several of the disputed documents--with the names of officers redacted. These documents quickly found their way into the hands of the media. They were widely analyzed; among other places, on the front page of the Chicago Tribune. They are available here:

On July 19, the City Council unanimously passed an ordinance proposed by Mayor Daley that revises how the Office of Professional Standards investigates civilian complaints. Immediately after the ordinance passed, the Mayor held a press conference at which he announced the appointment of a new director of OPS. As the coverage and commentary below make clear, these moves, though welcome, did not satisfy public demands for meaningful reform.
