DePaul students stage 29-hour Sit-Out, Receive Some Demands

This brief article is based on bits and pieces and written by a third party.
Dozens of DePaul activists staged a sit-out outside of the Lincoln Park Campus's Student Center, to protest their university's continued refusals to build infrastructure to combat rape. The protest began Wednesday morning, and continued until some as-yet-unknown demands were met in a noon Thursday meeting with bureaucrat Jim Doyle.

Some classes were cancelled by sympathetic professors who urged students to join the demonstration, and at least one department submitted catered food to the protesters.

Thirty-two students held out through the night, though a conflicts arose as neighboring bars closed. A fight arose as sexist drunken students attacked one of the tents and pushed some protesters, but conflict ended before it could escalate. Campus conservatives also protested the demonstration, arguing that the number of reported rapes are low. Previously, these same conservative groups had protested the annual Take Back the Night march and speak-out against sexual violence, arguing that feminist students should do something or cause change rather than simply march. These conservatives are Grade A morons.

Dozens of other students took shorter shifts throughout the sit-out, and initially Doyle and other administrators told protesters that they were irrelevant, before he conceded to negotiations.
