Armed with machine guns, the FBI and ICE sealed off a popular shopping center at 26th & Albany and according to community reports, temporarily detained more than 160 shoppers while carrying out their action.

I.C.E. claims that they came to execute warrants but according to Jesus Carlin, Sin Fronteras Youth Leader "They tried to execute the heart of our community and warn us not to march" he continued saying" "Their actions are clear to disrespect our community and children and to intimidate us."

The raids disrupted activities within the entire community. As news spread, people feared to leave their houses. Diego Bonesatti from the Illinois Coalition from Immigrant and Refugee Rights believes that intimidation was the goal of the agencies’ action today. Aldermen Muñoz and Cardenas agree, describing the event as “overkill.”

Community members will be gathering at the Federal Building Wednesday morning to denounce the actions and announce their commitment to march on next Tuesday, May 1st from Union Park to downtown demanding an end to the raids and a start to legalization.

The paramilitary trappings were unnecessary. But why doesn't this press release mention the fact that the raid targeted counterfeiters? Do we really want to defend people engaged in fraud and identity theft? Doesn't this perpetuate negative stereotypes about the undocumented - i.e., that they're engaging in illegal activities that hurt legal U.S. residents? Let's not get our ideology cloud our perception of the facts.

Counterfeit and identity theft operations are busted almost every day in a city as large as Chicago, but it usually doesn't require an infantry division to do it. Then again, if you're connected to the local 'Outfit' with ties to City Hall - a well placed phone call and payoff will usually take care of the problem. So while asking for a little clarity - a little skepticism about the government's allegations used to justify this raid might be also in order.

Unless you still believe in WMD's in Iraq. Or that Little Village is located in Anbar province.

Chicago High School Students Join National Hunger Strike Against Raids, Deportations and Separation of Families

On Good Friday, Elvira Arellano, joined by her pastor Rev. Walter L Coleman, began a hunger strike against the raids, deportations and separation of families. Now in the 21 st day, hundreds have joined the fast in cities across the nation.

Today, high school and college students from schools across the city will announce that they have also joined the hunger strike as they organize for the Unity March on May 1 st.

Ok, perhaps the FBI went over board, but where is the outrage among new Latinos when it comes to those who rip off our community and break the law by making false documents, and engage in other illegal activity?

Are forgers, felons, and criminals role models rather than the immigrants these crooks exploit?

I wish that our civil rights groups would do more to encourage tri-lateral North American treaty talks when it comes to labor rather than side with criminals, big business, and George Bush, and a corrupt Mexican government and its officers in the U.S.A.

But, perhaps I am just an old Chicano who thinks we should raise our children to respect the law, and fight against injustice - even when it is fellow Latinos exploiting the weak.
