CIW, McDONALD'S, AND McD's SUPPLIERS REACH AGREEMENT TO IMPROVE FARMWORKER WAGES, WORKING CONDITIONS!

With the arrival of the 2007 Truth Tour in Chicago just days away, the CIW, McDonald's, and its suppliers gathered at the Carter Center in Atlanta Monday, April 9, to announce an agreement that guarantees:

1. A penny more per pound to workers harvesting tomatoes for McDonald's;
2. A stronger code of conduct based on the principle of worker participation;
3. And a collaborative effort to develop a third party mechanism for monitoring conditions in the fields and investigating workers' complaints of abuse. Read the press release here!

Even as we celebrate this exciting new accord with McDonald's, the Campaign for Fair Food continues, and Chicago is more important than ever. Join us on the 13th and 14th as we chart the course for the continued expansion of farm labor justice through the fast-food industry. In the words of the Bard, uneasy lies the head that wears a crown...

Re: CIW VICTORY

maybe next time you should demand a 3 cent raise. especially if theyre going to fold that easily.

Re: CIW VICTORY

The Clown was scared out of his big red shoes, and the demands were met.
Oh yeah.

Now I'M lovin' it.

What happens on Saturday? Can we march on the Burger King?

Re: CIW VICTORY

hahaha, not burger king! they have veggie burgers. and chicago isn't really a pizza hut town is it? how about KFC? or mcdonald affiliates like Boston Market and Chipotle (or are they somehow in this deal as well). well, it will make friday and saturday that much more celebratory, though i'm sure we all hope that the CIW can come to us with some direction for their next move. but if they can't, well, we can still celebrate.

Re: CIW VICTORY

In the midst of this victory, CIW will likely make a call to the rest of the fast-food industry this weekend, to demand similar or better payment and labor terms.

CIW can point out that, since the industry leader met thes demands in half the time it took for Taco Bell to concede to the same set of demands, the rest of the fast food industry could well follow suit.

Re: Re: CIW VICTORY

Now is Burger King's turn and the rest should follow. But capital will always dodge and hide and look for the best return on investment. Vigilance and organizing are always neccesary. So many workers remain in poverty without organizations to back them up in disputes with employers.

This victory shows how powerful a coalition of Workers, consumers, and faith communities can be to bring dignity to the workplace.
