Defending Civil Liberties and Resisting the Empire
A Forum with Hamid Dabashi

The Bush regime and its supporters have declared a period of endless war, including a possible war on Iran. At the same time, they’ve mounted an escalating attack on the core freedoms that make dissent – and resistance – possible. Join us for a forum with Hamid Dabashi, one of the nation’s foremost progressive Iranian scholars and most passionate critics of the neocon agenda.

  • Including a special presentation by Iranian feminist Golbarg Bashi.
With antiwar activist Andy Thayer. • Moderated by Joleen Kirschenman.

    When: 7PM • Thursday • November 9
Where: DePaul University Lincoln Park Campus - Monroe Hall • 1st floor
    2312 N. Clifton Ave. • Chicago

  • Wheelchair accessable, non-smoking. Accessible via public transporation by CTA Red Line or Fullerton bus. | Download the PDF Flyer

    About the Speakers:

Hamid Dabashi is the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York. He is author of a number of highly acclaimed books and articles on Iran, medieval and modern Islam, comparative literature, world cinema, and the philosophy of art, including “Authority in Islam,” “Theology of Discontent,” “Truth and Narrative,” “Close Up: Iranian Cinema, Past, Present, Future” and an edited volume, “Dreams of a Nation: On Palestinian Cinema.” His depth as a cultural historian and critic and his sharp insights into global geopolitics have won him widespread critical acclaim as an author, lecturer and prominent critic of the neocon imperial agenda.

Iranian-Swedish feminist Golbarg Bashi, a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York, has tackled areas of academic inqury that include human rights, prevention of torture, Black and Third World feminisms, postcolonial theory, Iranian women's studies, and the politics of media representation of gender, race and ethics.
