[Chicago] - Thousands of hotel workers who are fighting for a better life will gather on Wednesday, August 9th to rally and march through the city’s most famous tourist district, North Michigan Avenue.
“We’re the reason people want to come to Chicago – nice clean hotel rooms and high quality service,” said Ernestine Willis, a room attendant at the Hilton Chicago. “The hotels need to recognize that fact. We are marching to show that we are proud of the work we do.”
“We’re going to get on the streets to show the hotels that we mean business,” said Marek Rozpadek, a 11-year employee of the Hyatt Regency Chicago. “We’re marching for more respect for all hotel workers. We need a fair workload, fair pay and fair benefits.”
Negotiations for downtown and key O’Hare union hotels began on July 25. Contracts covering 7,000 workers at 26 hotels with nearly 17,000 rooms will expire on August 31, 2006 at midnight.
