“‘The Nazis bring hate to our city and we have to protest that," said Susan Purviance, 49, of Toledo who joined the anti-Nazi demonstrators.’

Toledo police said 700 law enforcement personnel had been deployed, including state police, sheriff's deputies and police from surrounding communities.

"We want to say to the non-white community: we hope that you do something about the criminal subculture," said one neo-Nazi speaker.

“I‘f those problems are not handled by the black and Hispanic communities they will be handled by the white community.’”

“Hundreds of officers stood guard to make sure there was no repeat of the October melee as about 30 white supremacists shouted at counterdemonstrators and held placards, including one reading "White race, stand up and take back your neighborhood."

More than 100 others showed up in the freezing weather to protest against the members of the National Socialist Movement.

The counter demonstrators, chanting slogans and carrying signs reading "Go home Nazis" and "Stop the hate now," were kept behind barricades about 75 yards from the area where the neo-Nazis were cordoned off.”

About a dozen counterdemonstrators were arrested for minor offenses, Navarre said.

“Before the rally even got underway, police pulled over a car in west Toledo with Illinois plates. The four people inside were apparently headed downtown to the protest. Inside, police found sling shots, and other items of concern. All four people were arrested.

In a news conference after the rally, police and city officials said there were 25 adults and 4 juveniles arrested, all on misdemeanor charges. 7 people were arrested for violating the protection order signed Friday by a Lucas County Common Pleas judge that limited where people could protest. In that case, all 7 were at a library branch in west Toledo preparing to rally on their own.

City officials say 3 people were charged with carrying a concealed weapon, and in all cases it was a knife. The other charges were disorderly conduct and inciting violence.

The Toledo Police Department estimates it paid a total of $300,000 in overtime costs for its own officers, and officers from dozens of other police departments who helped out.”

“Hundreds of police officers from across northern Ohio along with state troopers have been mobilized to guard against another riot fueled by a neo-Nazi rally.

City leaders fear protesters of the neo-Nazis will try to rally somewhere outside the downtown demonstration and incite more trouble.

A Lucas County judge granted the city's request Friday to block the neo-Nazi group and counter protesters from rallying beyond the downtown government building's grounds.

This time, the rally will be about two miles from the racially mixed neighborhood where the original march was to take place.”

“A Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge yesterday gave Toledo police the authority to arrest any neo-Nazis who try to march in a residential neighborhood today.

Police plan to restrict access to the area bounded by Adams and Superior streets, Constitution Avenue, and Spielbusch Avenue to Michigan Street, starting at 8 a.m. The rally is from 2 to 4 p.m.

City officials said the order also applies to any other group - such as anti-Nazi protesters - who try to meet in a neighborhood away from the rally zone.”
