Walgreens Strike

Walgreens Strike: Statement by Chuck Sauer, Executive Director of National Pharmacists Association, Re: July 20 Meeting With Walgreen Co.
Wednesday July 20, 6:26 pm ET

CHICAGO, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Today's meeting resulted in no progress: Walgreens irresponsibly refuses to address serious safety risks due to inadequate staffing at its pharmacies.
We call on the company to release the number of errors at its pharmacies as a way of backing its claim that current staffing levels are adequate.

The company's last proposal fails to preserve the staffing review committee, which the union had used to try to address understaffing at the busiest pharmacies. It also contains poison pills aimed at destroying the union and silencing pharmacists who are sounding the alarm on safety.

Walgreens seems more intent on breaking the union that on addressing its own pharmacists' concerns over patient safety. The company seeks a free hand to turn pharmacies into assembly lines, without regard for the need for pharmacists to counsel patients and take the time to ensure they go home with the right medication.

This work stoppage is going strong, and will continue until Walgreens stops putting profits ahead of the patients it is supposed to serve.
