Families of the Wrongly Convicted are holding a candlelight vigil at Belmont and Western in memory of May Molina Ortiz who died in police custody one year ago.
May Molina, an anti-police brutality activist and founder of Families of the Wrongly Convicted died on May 25, 2004 after less than 48 hours in police custody. The 55-year-old wheelchair bound grandmother and her son Michael were arrested for drug possession during a police raid that ransacked their home. May Molina Ortiz, who had multiple health problems including high blood pressure and diabetes was not allowed to take her medications despite pleas on her behalf by her family.

Michael Ortiz was jailed for over 10 days before charges were dropped for lack of evidence. Michael Ortiz also filed a lawsuit against the CPD. He is suing for false arrest and compensation for the pain and suffering he endured as a result of missing his mother's wake and funeral.

Michael Ortiz's sister, April Ortiz attended a Chicagp Police Board Meeting on May 19th to inquire as to why her family has never been informed about the results of the police investigation into their mother's death. She was told that the investigation won't be completed until the end of June.
