MAYOR DALEY SIGNS PRO-GAY MARRIAGE PETITION
Petition “demand[s] that Cook County immediately
issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.”

CHICAGO – Wednesday, Oct. 27 - At the close of tonight’s annual Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame celebration at the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley signed a petition that calls for “immediately repealing the discrimnatory ban on same-sex marriage” and “demand[ing] that Cook County immediately issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.”
As the mayor was making his way through the crowd following the close of the program, an activist from the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network and the Equal Marriage NOW! coalition called out, “Mayor Daley, would you like to sign a petition for equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians?” The mayor briefly glanced at the petition and then signed it in the presence of several witnesses, including the mayor’s official liason to Chicago’s gay and lesbian community, Bill Greaves.
“Especially considering presumptive Senator Barak Obama’s cowardly opposition to equal marriage rights for lesbian and gay people, the mayor’s endorsement is certainly welcome,” said Andy Thayer of the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network and Equal Marriage NOW! coalition. “One would hope that Mayor Daley takes to heart the petition’s call for the immediate issuance of marriage licenses here in Cook County, and publicly calls on his ally, Cook County Clerk David Orr, to stop discriminating against lesbian and gay couples forthwith.”

Spate of anti-LGBTQ hate crimes at DePaul
28 Oct 2004
This is all on top of the incident posted earlier this Fall to Chicago Indymedia in which a DePaul professor hatefully spoke to some Palestinian students about Muslims and Palestine. The administration has not as of yet dealt with this incident in a manner satisfactory to the students who were harassed.

By the bye, how many of the peace voters you've registered will be out on the streets on Nov 3 against the war? - no matter who wins? Inquiring minds want to know
about those peace voters

I hope that you are doing well. I am writing to raise awareness about a
series of instances of homophobia/hate crimes that have occurred on
DePaul University's campus. Over the past two weeks I have received a
number of student complaints that they have been verbally and/or
physically assaulted on campus as a result of their percieved or actual
sexual orientation. For example, there have been incidents reported
within the dorms, and in the alleys and streets on campus. I have been
actively working with the queer student organization on campus
(Spectrum) to figure out ways to actively respond to and raise
awareness
about these hate incidents. As such, we will be having a day of
resistance on Monday, Nov. 1. Details are as follows:
1. Sit-in demonstration
10-4:30pm
Student Center in the Atrium
(the Student Center is located at 2250 N. Sheffield and the Atrium
space is on the first floor)
Please bring any signs, posters, etc. promoting the idea that hate is
not tolerated. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
2. Rally/Protest
Our rally will begin at 5pm in the Quad (grassy area in the middle of
campus), and we will begin our march around 5:30pm- we will be marching
only around campus.
Again, please bring any signs, posters, drums, tshirts, buttons,
megaphones, etc.
I encourage all of you to try to make an appearance if you can. It is
important to not only have members of the DePaul community there but of
the larger Chicagoland community as well. Your solidarity is much
needed. Please help us to take a stand in saying that homophobia, hate
crimes, and discriminaiton of any kind will not be tolerated. If anyone
has any questions they can feel free to contact me directly. Also, if
anyone is interested in helping with the poster making this weekend
please give me a call on my cell phone at 708.927.2863. Much thanks,
and
I hope to see you on Monday.
Peace and solidarity,
Nicole
