Advertised in the sports pages of local newspapers and listed as a Kid's Event by the Mayor's Office of Special Events, the Chicago Air & Water Show is considered by many to be harmless and wholesome family entertainment, but the reality is that the Air & Water Show is nothing more than a celebration of U.S. military superiority, a costly and objectionable expenditure of our tax dollars, unwelcome solicitation and recruitment, and a promotion of the "might makes right" philosophy.

All individuals and organizations are welcome!
If you are opposed to war, militarism, and injustice then you need to be here!
Help us to remind people what the true purpose of these machines is!
Join with us to demand that our tax dollars be spent on domestic and social needs, not wasted on wars of mass destruction and corporate plunder.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY, AUGUST 21-22
North Avenue Beach
East end of the pedestrian bridge across Lake Shore Drive (2 blocks north of North Ave.)

good work! I was watching the baseball game and the announcers were gloating over this obscene display. Glad to hear there will be a protest

Re: Say “NO” to the Air & Water Show!

To call this exercise in support of militarism and killing an "Air and Water Show," is akin to calling the Nazi death chambers "Chemical Experimentation Sites."

I am reminded of Norman Finkelstein's insightful observation that a German museum in Berlin dedicated to the remembrance of extermination of Native Americans and African slaves would evoke howls of outrage from Americans. No doubt. "We" are an exception to every atrocity committed by others only.

"[The war against Mexico was] the most unjust war ever undertaken by a stronger nation against a weaker one."
Memoirs, Ulysses S. Grant

Re: Say “NO” to the Air & Water Show!

Did you speak out when soviet union was parading giant tanks around the kremlin? were they compared to nazis? no probably not. right bob?

Say No to US Imperialism, Then and Now

Hmm, you are correct in your assumption that I did not speak out against Soviet tanks. They were for the purpose of defending the Soviet people from US and other imperialist attack. And I'm not speaking of Germans only, whose forces killed millions.

How conveniently people forget that the US, the UK and other "free" nations invaded the infant Soviet Union in 1918 in an effort to bring down the revolutionary government. We have Woodrow Wilson to thank for that and for sending troops into Mexico after Pancho Villa "invaded" the Mexico that was formerly one-half of his country.

And of course the US, the UK and France and others never, ever massed forces against the Soviets behind the Churchill rhetoric of a phantom "Iron Curtain." Right.

One need not approve of Stalinist oppression to identify the aggressors against a system that threatened the vaunted profit system. The same system that is today defined as a "liberating" force as it kills and destroys to insure safe sledding for the Haliburtons and Bechtels.

Re: Say “NO” to the Air & Water Show!

I see. as my family was dying in the stalin purges famines you were defending soviet union from US.
thanks. i'll pass it along to my grandma.

and by the way... the air and water show still went on with most people oblivious to the protest.

Re: Say “NO” to the Air & Water Show!

A group of us from Peace Pledge-Chicago went to hand out flyers and talk with folks who were visiting the military recruitment tents. Honestly, I was dreading it but we'd made the commitment to go, so we did. It was actually, surprisingly, a pleasant afternoon. We just talked with folks from the vantage point of getting all the information about recruitment. People have the right to make whatever decisions they choose, but they should at least be fully informed before they do so. People seemed to appreciate knowing that they have other options. About 20 people ended up leaving the line at the Navy tent after talking with one of our folks. It was really gratifying.
