NBC: Anti-War Protesters Firm On Gold Coast March

City Won't Issue Permit For Michigan Avenue Protest
CHICAGO -- Mayor Richard Daley is firmly denying another request by anti-war protesters to march on Michigan Avenue on the first anniversary of last year's mass demonstrations.

The Daley administration has repeatedly denied the March 20th Coalition a permit to march on Michigan Avenue, suggesting instead that marchers use Clark Street to march into the Loop.

Activists, such as Rachel Perrotta, say that's not acceptable. Perrotta and others delivered an invitation to Daley's office to join their march and end the disagreement between his office and demonstrators.

Daley believes protesters on Michigan Avenue or its sidewalks would disrupt business, be a burden to the city and police protection, and cost the city in lawsuits. Organizers say they'll take to the sidewalk, which they believe is their constitutional right.

In an attempt to reach a resolution, police general counsel Sheri Mecklenburg sent a letter to the organizers urging them to come up with an alternate route to Michigan Avenue, police News Affairs Director David Bayless said.

The letter warned that protest organizer Andy Thayer would be held legally responsible if the group violated any laws on Saturday.

"We'll have to assess crowd size and the demeanor of the crowd," Bayless said. "We're going to make that decision Saturday."

Daley said, "To disrupt the whole city and cost the city a lot of money, everybody has a right to demonstrate they have a right to make their views known, but at the same time we have to basically manage the city."

The march is scheduled for Saturday at noon.
