Join us at the Thorne Auditorium, at Northwestern Law School, 375 E. Chicago Ave., (Chicago and Lake Shore Drive) on Friday, March 12 at 7 PM for the official release of “Where We Stood: Chicago’s Resistance to the U.S. War on Iraq.” Kathy Kelly, prominent anti-war activist and three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will introduce the documentary.

We’re very excited to finally be able to release the documentary and in a venue just steps from the momentous events of March 20, 2003. This version includes a new music track, much of it donated and/or originally composed by Chicago bands and musicians, a development that has both amazed and humbled us. We think this version is a richer piece because the music completes it as a unique Chicago story. One of the musicians involved is Kinan Abou-afach, a former member of the Syrian National Orchestra, now living in Chicago.

Join us in marking the unfortunate one-year anniversary of the start of the war and get fired up for the events planned for March 20th here and around the country. This is a chance to remember our efforts, regain our momentum as a movement toward peace, and to send a message to Washington – we STILL say NO to this war.

On March 20th, 2003, at the start of the U.S. War on Iraq, more than 750 people were arrested in Chicago during a peaceful protest. More than 100 people were arrested in the following days during planned non-violent civil disobedience actions. This documentary by Chicago producers Linda Beckstrom, Blake Beckstrom, Jon Groot, and Seth Skundrick features interview segments from thirty protesters and organizers, taking you inside their experiences, from chaos on the streets, to jail solidarity, to renewed commitment to peace. Dramatic footage from the March 20th demonstration and other protests illustrates stories of resistance from a cross section of those who stood up to say no to the war.

“The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Kathy Kelly, prominent anti-war activist and three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will introduce the screening.

Kelly helped initiate Voices in the Wilderness, a campaign to end the UN/US sanctions against Iraq. Voices in the Wilderness organized 70 delegations to visit Iraq in the period between 1996 and the beginning of the “Operation Shock and Awe” warfare (March 2003). Kelly has been to Iraq twenty times since January 1996, when the Voices campaign began. In October 2002, she joined Iraq Peace Team members in Baghdad where she and the team maintained a presence throughout the bombardment and invasion. Kelly left Iraq on April 19, 2003 and has returned there twice, for 17 day visits with team members who’ve remained in Baghdad. She also traveled to Iraq from December 21, 2003 – January 8, 2004. She was recently sentenced to three months in prison for her participation in a nonviolent protest calling for closure of a military combat training school based in Fort Benning, GA.

Kelly’s appearance and the screening are significant for the Chicago anti-war community in the midst of this election year. Many groups are increasing their efforts to organize around the issues and keep the public informed. The screening and official release of this timely documentary offer an opportunity to galvanize these efforts.
