Wow, this is pretty fucking awful on behalf of that school's administration.
I've dealt with high school administrators in regard to protests, they'll probably claim that they would've allowed the gathering if the students had gotten permission beforehand. EVEN IF you agree with their standpoint (I don't, personally), expulsion is far too severe a punishment for cutting one day of school.
