I am so tired of being dehumanized due to my race. I was accepted at Olive Harvey College Nursing program. I knew the program was a challenging one. I gave up my job which I had for 15 years to dedicate to this program. I wanted to be a nurse. I knew I had the dedication and determination. But... I did not expect the discrimination that I faced. Each day became difficult as my nursing instructors dehumanized me because of my race. Mentally, I am exhausted. Other classmates who were of Europeans, Asians, and Latinas were also dehumanized. The school administrators were familiar with our situation. Retaliation became our instructors answers. It became more difficult. The City Colleges of Chicago administrators: Angela Starks, Deidre Lewis, Chancellor Wayne Waston and James Tyree made no apologies to us. Which validated to me that they support their teachers' actions. I thought nurses were not suppose to be racist? I wonder what will happen if these same nursing instructors were taking care of a patient who are not of same race as them? Would they be able to fully provide the quality of care their patients deserve? I doubt it! I don't feel that this sort of behavior should be tolerated. Educators who are also nurses teaching making racial remarks to their students in the classroom. How professional is that? City Colleges of Chicago administrators offering no apologies. What a shame. The quality of education has gone down tremendously instead of focusing on teaching their students how to be a nurse, they are teaching discrimination instead.
I hope someone has some answers. Maybe one day, we will get an apology. I doubt it.
