Re: Report Back from SDS conference

I think your analysis of the SDS convention brought up alot of great points and concerns ...especially about the FIRST national structure workshop. I do not think you should have used people's names without their consent but you do have the right to do so. Also, considering how fast SDS has grown in only 8 months there is almost no way to avoid scheduling issues. Regarding the night march...You should have come, there were some points where things got out of hand...but overall the march was a success. We took the streets for the vasat majority of the march, something rarely done in chicago without a permit. We also got alot of thumbs up, head nods, and supportive honks from people of color...the police were even on our side. Multiple officers, stated that they were happy what were doing, and agreed with our stance...when one white police officer attempted to arrest a participant, a black police officer let the protestor go because she supported the march... they agreed to let us walk back to the campus if we cleared the road of debris that some participants had thrown in the road to create roadblocks. It is true that some people were pissed off, and some of those people happened to be people of color... but when you march in the streets, whether it is unpermitted or not drivers get pissed off. The most constructive thing about the march though, I believe, was what happened after the action was over. Many participants sat in a large circle and discussed the pros/cons of the march and also adressed people's grievences. The debriefing was great. There are almost always people who leave a protest ferling let down, alienated, and or upset for one thing or another and by sitting down and discussing the action, everyone got to express their concerns. The only interaction I know of with a bystander who opposed the march actually happened the next morning, and the man was white and the husband of a professor at UofC. Thanks for the input scribbler, the only way to build a successful revolutionary movement is to constantly evaluate that movement. Without questioning our own thoughts and actions there will never be change.
