Cops Need to be Reigned-In

Gay Liberation Network and Black LGBT & Allies for Equality were similarly restricted by Chicago cops when we appeared at a church in early June to protest antigay teaching and discrimination.

Apparently creating ordinances out of thin air, cops dictated that we move across the street from the church (then let an antigay church member disrupt a press interview on "our" side of the street). They dictated where we had to stand with our leaflets (150 feet from the entrance), and that we could not use sound within 30 minutes of the beginning of a worship service.

GLN stands ready to challenge out-of-control cops. Like Generalissimo Busho, cops don't like restrictions on their "right" to powertrip, but they are nonetheless bound to uphold the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly.

No doubt, Chicago cops smarted at having to "allow" antiwar marchers access to Michigan Avenue earlier this year, and are now determined to reassert their always presumed "right to rule."
