2nd, Joshua is a nationalist and does not understand that "hypocrisy" wrote about an aspect of the human situation under capitalism.
Joshua cannot understand because his mode of thinking does not allow him to understand. He sees illegal immigrants though the eyes of a belief system, which is very rigid, and not judged through his own eyes. That is - Joshua has not developed his thinking, it is stunted in development by appealing to a father-like figure to tell him what to believe. This will not help him learn HOW to think about and understand other people's situation. In this case - poor people from other countries and the conditions which is a driving force for people to immigrate. Hypocrisy brought this up a bit. Josh might need some positive reinforcement as far as looking into situations in ways that might not be comfortable given his hopefully temporary blindness caused by nationalist ideology.
Joshua does not see humans, or perhaps in a degrading manner, but he chooses to see the U.S. border as some sort of sacred idol. What else is at stake here? His very upbeat and optimistic behavior is expressed like "I'm bigger than you" but really it's "I'm part of something bigger than myself and that's what I'll replace with my own thinking and doing." In short, Josh is a living, breathing person but with beliefs and desired activities that also make him an enemy of humanity AT THIS POINT.
Josh is a powerless, atomized man in the modern society, just as nearly all humans. Of course he wants to FEEL powerful, but Josh has taken the wrong route - his feeling of power is through the (U.S.) nation, which is a power over and against and excluding people, in this instance illiegal immigrants. To place his perspective and activity in the service of a social STRUCTURE that already has positions of power in place, in which the ideology and enforcement of the border and the continuing appeal of nationalism plays a necessary part in keeping the "masses" just that, a neurotic fulfillment of togetherness - nationalism and patriotism.
