Chicago Opposition to 2016 Olympics Bid Ramps Up

Not what Pierre de Coubertin had in mindChicago is one of four finalist cities for the 2016 Summer Olympics, though Chicago's bid for the thirty-first Summer Olympiad has drawn controversy among Chicagoans. The Chicago 2016 committee has hired the controversial PR firm Hill & Knowlton, and surveys of Chicagoans show a degree of skepticism over the bid. Despite promises to keep Chicago tax funds out of any payment for the Olympics, the city and mayor have evidently broken that promise.

If history is any guide, should Chicago win the bid, Chicagoans have huge cost overruns, economic disaster, and a trail of human rights and civil rights abuses to look forward to in the wake of Olympics. Some Chicago community groups have objected to the Olympics, while others sought community benefits agreements with the city, and even protested within City Hall.

The stakes will be raised in on April 2 when the International Olympic Committee visits Chicago for a week-long visit. No Games Chicago, a coalition of Chicago communities, is organizing opposition against the Olympic bid, including a rally and bike ride.

Re: Chicago Opposition to 2016 Olympics Bid Ramps Up

Jeez, let's not predict doom from the start. The animating spirit of Chicago is "make no little plans" and I--like a lot of folks around here--think that hosting an Olympics would produce opportunities that far outweigh the parade of horribles that are listed here. Oh, and I have no relationship whatsoever with any Olympics organizers--just an independent, non-corporate participatory, well-read, open-minded citizen who wants to see the city keep moving forward.

i do not envy the poor in that town, or the honest organizers that are not undercover shills, who are going to suffer as a result of their situation, and their earnestness in trying to avoid the treachery and official thievery and opportunism that will result in the fix that is bringing the Olympics to Chicago.

You are going to have to -really- come up with some kind of 'coup to stop this, because it is as good as done.

The Olympics create social problems in whatever city they come to.

No matter who ends up with the Olympics in their city they will face all of these terrible results. I don't support the Olympics because of the damage it causes to poor communities leading to the displacement of people and the ecological damage that will never be restored. Check the facts about why people protest the Olympics.

No matter where the Olympics are we have a problem. It's not just about protesting the Olympics in Chicago, it's about protecting those who are about to be displaced, and displacement is only the beginning.

When is our voice going to be heard? We oppose having the Olympics in Chicago. We are going broke and the working class is fed up with paying for the political corruption and now another of the mayor's follies.

Re: Chicago Opposition to 2016 Olympics Bid Ramps Up

I think it's unfair to have my family up rooted to play a series of games. We elected a mayor to help improve our situations not to place us in the gutter, neither myself nor family was born with a silver spoon so where will we go. I don't think anyone cares, I can't recall previous olympics favoring anyone but the rich, so I guess in the gutter we will be. GO RIO!
