THE ENEMY OF NATURE argues that capitalism is inherently
eco-destructive and unreformable, and that we need to bring it down and build an alternative worthy of humanity and nature for the sake of the future. We need to imagine the actual contours of this alternative -- "ecosocialism" -- as the successor to the failed socialisms of the twentieth century through an incorporation of a more radical concept of gender and the development of ecological forms of production.
Joel Kovel, author of THE ENEMY OF NATURE (Zed Press), formerly a psychoanalyst, now Alger Hiss Professor of Social Studies at Bard College, is the author of eight other books, including WHITE RACISM, HISTORY AND SPIRIT, and RED HUNTING IN THE PROMISED LAND. In 1998, Kovel ran for the U.S. Senate in New York on the Green Party ticket; and in 2000, he was a candidate for the Green Party Presidential nomination.
