Wed 4/10: Protest Dick Devine!

State's Attorney Dick Devine is speaking Wednesday at 6:30 PM on a panel about the death penalty. This is the man who presides over the office that prosecuted victims of Jon Burge's police torture ring, sent 13 of them to Death Row (those remaining there are known as the Death Row 10), and at least 53 others to prison. Tell Devine your sick of his office's hypocracy! North Park University's Anderson Chapel, 3225 W. Foster, 6:30 PM, Wednesday, April 10
WHAT: Protest Dick Devine!

WHEN: Wednesday, April 10 at 6:30 pm

WHERE: North Park University's Anderson Chapel, 3225 W. Foster

WHY: State's Attorney Dick Devine is speaking on a panel about the death penalty. This is the man who presides over the office that prosecuted victims of Jon Burge's police torture ring, sent 13 of them to Death Row (those remaining there are known as the Death Row 10), and at least 53 others to prison. That systematic torture occurred is common knowledge, confirmed by District Court Judge Milton Shadur and the Chicago Police Department's own internal investigation.

Dick Devine was Assistant State's Attorney when much of the torture occurred. It was prosecutors from his office at that time who took statements from men who police had just tortured. These prosecutors had to have known what was going on.

While in private practice, Dick Devine even represented Jon Burge in court. Not surprisingly, as State's Attorney he has refused to investigate the police officers responsible for the torture and has fought tooth and nail against claims of torture by the Death Row 10. He also has done his best to resist the appointment of a special prosecutor who would investigate the torture.

Dick Devine is the embodiment of why the death penalty is too flawed to fix, and he is coming out to speak in favor of it. It is prosecutors like him who conspire with police to manufacture confessions and to send victims of police torture to jail, making the idea of a "fair" death penalty a sham. This Wednesday, come out to let Devine know that we do not give him the authority to send anyone to death row, and that we will not rest until the Death Row 10 get the justice they deserve.
