Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando will present her new groundbreaking feature about a love story and the little known 1912 massacre of nearly 6,000 black Cubans, who rose up against Cuba's Plantocracy and US agribusiness. This independently produced feature follows a present day Afro-Cuban woman, Mercedes, as she begins to decipher her family secrets through a photo of her
great-grandparents. Between reality and the world of
her dreams, she learns about the love between her
great grandparents and the ties that they had with the
revolt and the Independence Party of of Color - which
spearheaded the resistance. As she uncovers her family's
roots she discovers revelations about the incident, the fact
that most of Cuba's Independence fighters had been
men and women of color and the importance of the
Independence Party of Color to Cuban history and culture.

Through her work, Rolando aims to rescue our collective
memory in the search for our roots as she contributes to the knowledge and understanding of the history of the African Diaspora in this century.
