The Congressional Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, known as the congressional super committee, was formed in a deal reached to break the impasse over raising the nation’s debt ceiling in August. The super committee, composed of six Democrats and six Republicans – half from the House and half from the Senate – are tasked with reducing the nation's deficit by at least $1.2 trillion over the next ten years, by making budget cuts and/or increasing revenue.
