Security Guard Dead, 5 Others Wounded in Shootings Across Chicago

A security guard was killed on the West Side and at least five others wounded Thursday night in separate South Side shootings, according to police.


A security guard was killed on the West Side and at least five others wounded Thursday night in separate South Side shootings, according to police.

The 51-year-old guard was shot about 9:40 p.m. in the parking lot of the Save-A-Lot grocery store in which he worked in the 5500 block of West North Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood, authorities said.

Mayberry Porter, of the 4800 block of West Polk Street, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Witnesses told police he had gotten into a grey or silver SUV in the parking lot with people who first shot him and then threw him out of the car.

Chicago Fire Department paramedics tried to revive the man, police said. They transported him to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

At 9:05 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 1200 block of South Fairfield Avenue in the Douglas Park neighborhood. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

About the same time, an 18-year-old man was shot in the back in the 6400 block of South Eggleston Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood. He transported himself to St. Bernard Hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

A 22-year-old woman was driving east in the 400 block of East 71st Street at about 7:20 p.m. when she heard a gunshot and realized she was shot in the leg, police said.

She was transported to Saint Bernard Hospital and was in good condition, police said.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the buttocks while he was walking down the 6300 block of South Wolcott Avenue in the West Englewood at about 6:45 p.m., police said.

About 10 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the thigh after two people fired shots in his direction. He was walking in the first block of East 101st Street in the Roseland neighborhood, police said.

Nobody was in custody for any of the shootings and detectives were investigating.
