Stand Up So Ohio’s Veal Calves Can Turn Around!

Join Us on April 5th at the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board Meeting!

THANK YOU to the many of you who recently emailed the Ohio Department of Agriculture urging that calves have humane living conditions. Ohio’s veal calves now need you your presence at the April 5th Ohio Livestock Card Standards Board meeting. At this meeting the Board will have the opportunity to reverse their recent vote to permit the confinement of veal calves in crates so small they’re unable to turn around for more than half of their lives before slaughter. Your attendance to show your support for Ohio’s veal calves is imperative! All that is required is your presence! We’ll be wearing tee shirts with a special message to the Board, so we can’t be missed.

Can we count on you to speak out for veal calves?

If you’re planning on attending please RSVP to info [at] ohiohumane.com so we can inform you of pre-meeting plans.

Ohio Livestock Board Defies Animal Welfare Agreement

By Doris Lin, About.com Guide March 29, 2011

The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board has voted to permit the continued use of veal crates, despite last year's agreement to the contrary between the Ohio Farm Bureau and The Humane Society of the United States.

In June of 2010, Ohioans for Humane Farms, a coalition of animal welfare, family farming, food safety, and environmental advocates, had gathered enough signatures and was prepared to place a ballot initiative on Ohio's November, 2010 ballot that would have amended the state constitution to ban veal crates, gestation stalls and battery cages. At the last minute, coalition member HSUS and the Ohio Farm Bureau reached a compromise agreement, under which HSUS agreed to withdraw the ballot initiative. Also under the agreement, the Ohio Farm Bureau would make certain "recommendations" to the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board on various animal welfare measures, including banning veal crates by 2017. While the OLCSB is free to ignore that recommendation, doing so means that HSUS is free to submit another ballot initiative on farmed animal welfare.

What you can do: Ohioans for Humane Farms is asking Ohio residents to attend the OLCSB's Tuesday, April 5, 2011 meeting, to ask them to reverse their decision on veal crates, and is running buses from the Cleveland and Cincinnati areas:
