North Center/Lincoln Square Zoning Change Meeting

47th ward alderman, Eugene Schulter, stages meeting to create appearance of democractic approval of zoning change that would allow more condos in rapidiy gentrifying community
Residents of the 47th ward’s North Center/Lincoln Square neighborhood will attend a meeting on Tuesday at 7:00 at the Ravenswood Covenant Church, 4900 North Damen, to tell their Alderman how they feel about the rampant "condo-ization" of their community.

At the meeting, which was called by the ward’s alderman, Eugene Schulter, and apparently advertised to only a small group of area residents, the fate of an empty lot at 4826 North Damen will be decided. The lot, formerly the site of a single family home, has been razed, but a zoning change is needed before plans to build condominiums on the location can move ahead.

But residents of the area need more affordable housing, not more "luxury" condos. Local community housing activists, neighborhood association members, and concerned citizens plan to attend the zoning change meeting on Tuesday, to tell the Alderman "No More Condos!" Only property owners living within 100 feet of the site will be allowed to vote on the plan (according to city requirements), but many should attend the meeting to make sure their concerns are heard.

To make sure residents of the immediately affected area know about the meeting, neighbors will meet at the site of the empty lot (4826 N. Damen) on Monday, Jan. 15, at 6:00 PM to distribute flyers in the area. All are invited to help with this effort.

All housing activists and others concerned about the gentrification of Chicago should attend this meeting to send a message to Daley--We need affordable housing, not more condos!
