POLICE PROFILING… Not in this City…???

The Illinois Human Rights Collaborative hereby denounces the harassment that parents at Saint Procopius Catholic School, located at 1625 S. Allport, in the heart of the Mexican Pilsen Neighborhood, have been increasingly facing on the part of the Chicago Police Department when dropping off their children between 7:45 am and 8:00 am

During the last past days the Chicago Police Department has placed a police patrol right in front of the school to basically harass parents to not double park when dropping their children off at school. The attitude of the police officers has been very hostile towards the mostly Mexican parents, who need to drop their children off as fast as they can in their way to work. Parents are pressed also by the internal policies of the school, which provides tardy notes if children are dropped off after 7:55 am, and children are not accepted into the school if they accumulate more than five (5) tardy notes during any given semester.

This morning, the Illinois Human Rights Collaborative monitored the situation personally. A police officer was observed giving a ticket to a parent just for slowing down while driving on Allport. The police officer placed himself in front of the car to not allow the driver to move and wrote the ticket without even asking questions or opening dialogue of any kind. This hostile and disrespectful attitude on the part of the Chicago Police Department cannot be tolerated.

How many neighborhoods in Chicago have Catholic schools? How many traffic jams take place in Chicago every morning while children are dropped off at many different schools? How many traffic jams involve school buses rather than private cars and drivers and residents have to wait for children to access their schools?

Why is it that the Chicago Police Department is focusing their attention in the Mexican Pilsen Neighborhood? If this is not a comprehensive policy of the Chicago Police Department that addresses all traffic jams all over the city, and if they are consciously just focusing on the Immigrant Mexican low-income neighborhood of Pilsen… then, by many standards, this is Police Profiling… and this has to stop!

We invite the media to come and see the situation first hand. Come by the school tomorrow Friday, March 22nd, and cover the abuse that is taking place. Monitor what is happening and bring it out into the public attention. We invite the local Police Commander to be proactive, call the School and organize a meeting with the parents, talk to them, harassing them is not the answer to this common sense problem. Wasn’t the CAPS program supposed to work this way, a community-police partnership?

We invite the parents at the Saint Procopius School to defend your rights. Don’t wait for the Chicago Police Department to be respectful and helpful. Organize yourselves into what could be the Saint Procopius School Parent Association. Call the Collaborative and we will be happy to organize a meeting for this purpose.

DISCRIMINACION POLICIACA…
