Baradar capture story planted to divert coverage of surge setbacks

The story of the alleged derring-do capture of Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in Karachi by combined Pakistani and US forces, if true, was planted in the media to divert headlines from the bogged Marjah operation.

Did you notice that news of the alleged capture of Mullah Baradar came precisely at a moment when the so-called Marjah offensive in Afghanistan was yielding nothing but bad headlines?

The mullah had been captured more than a week previously, according to reports. Why the timing of the announcement of the alleged capture of Baradar?

During the first day of the Marjah push, the Western military were murdering as many civilians as Taliban fighters, and certainly not winning any hearts and minds among Afghans.

The military needed a diversionary news item to take the pressure and headlines off their failures. Enter the story of Baradar's capture.

Shallow Americans have a new "bad guy" image (Baradar's) to hate and a reason to feel good for the space of a moment about their military and its alleged accomplishments in ridding the world of "evil".

In truth, their government is the greatest purveyor of evil operating on the world scene today. But acceptance of this unfortunate fact will have to await another day.

Meanwhile, Joe Sixpack and his fat Christian wife can gloat over Baradar's alleged capture and speculate about how the Pakistanis are torturing him.
