Finish It and Demonstrate Why You Were Elected

Boy the health care debate sure is getting old. We've been bogged down for months with this and it feels like it. The president is doing a great job of standing his ground while showing a willingness to compromise. However, the debate turned nasty via non-profits backed by lobbying interests like Dick Armey's FreedomWorks and Rick Scott's Conservatives for Patients’ Rights.

The conversation has been dominated by these interests for so long things have become messy. Now Republicans wish to mire down the debate and take more time on this. They agree with the president on a number of things including health care being too expensive, people deserving quality care and everyone deserving coverage.

Democrats were late to step up and stand up to the heat being turned up by special interests on the issue. This of course meant more than just standing up for themselves in the face of a thrashing from a minority of voters backed by heaping stacks of big business cash. It meant standing up for the 70% plus of Americans who support government sponsored heath care coverage.

The White House and the Democrats still need to prove it is affordable and won't add to the deficit. Once that hurdle is cleared that 70% and perhaps more will be on board. His approval rating on his handling of the issue has moved up a couple of points and as long as he keeps his momentum moving the way it is he should be alright.

The craziness has not shaken a core belief, no matter the party, we need the reform. It has made people feel frustrated regarding the current conversation though they still support change. That looks good for the president.

Now it's time for the sake of all selected to bring change whether Republican, Democrat, Independent or other to get this over with. It's time to pivot away from the debate and move to other issues Americans are concerned with. This is not just the job of Democrats. Republicans have a responsibility here to the more than 70% of Americans as well.

The town hall fracases erupting all over America fueled by health care related interests were so detestable and got so out of hand it became an uncivilized sloppy mess. People involved were seen chasing representatives out of halls and following orders to be so disorderly the majority of people there could not speak. In fact, because his group and supporters got so out of hand firm clients began complaining, The New York Times reported Dick Armey lost his job with DLA Piper, a lobbying firm.

The majority of people agree affordable reform is needed. People are reminded in times like these things can change fast and we may very well be in need of a public option someday. In fact on Sep 16, 2009 even FOX News' Bill O'Reilly supported it saying, "I want that. I want, not for personally for me, but for working Americans, to have a option, that if they don’t like their health insurance, if it’s too expensive, they can’t afford it, if the government can cobble together a cheaper insurance policy that gives the same benefits, I see that as a plus for the folks." That's what over 70% of Americans want too. It's time to wrap it up and move on. Otherwise, what will Democrats, or anyone else elected on the change platform, have to offer come campaign time? Campaigning is already revving up. This debate is dragging the conversation down - simply overwhelming it.

As of right now the economy is starting to stabilize but people are still hurting. It will be a long slow slog to recovery. The two wars from the Bush administration will still be raging and the longer those continue the more the new administration starts to own pieces of them. In the president's favor his first steps regarding peeling back illegal surveillance, stepping up better inter agency cooperation and better relations with Muslims both here and abroad have led to recent terrorist plots being foiled. This proves Dick Cheney and others claiming it was prudent to rob Americans of civil rights or we would be hit again, like the policies of the Bush administration, were wrong. The constitution was right with regards to civil rights, government intrusion and government expansion.

However, the longer the heath care debate continues the worse the impression for both sides. If health care reform does not pass in some way middle and lower class Americans won't forget all those involved in bogging it down. It's time to wrap it up and demonstrate change. The missed attempts are growing old.
