Call Two for Sector Activity from the RNC-WC

The RNC Welcoming Committee is tickled pink that four of downtown St. Paul’s seven sectors have been adopted by organizing bodies throughout the country. Organizers from coast to coast representing a variety of different communities have come to the fore to help show how unwelcome the RNC is in St. Paul, and the growing momentum is exciting to see.

However, three sectors remain orphaned, parentless, crying into the night. Realistically, if these sectors remain unclaimed it greatly decreases our chances of success.

Adopted Sectors as of July 29:

Sector One: Pittsburgh Organizing Group

Sector Four: UA in the Bay

Sector Five: UA-Midwest, Bash Back!

Sector Six: Grey Coast, Campus Antiwar Network

Sectors Two, Three, Seven: Orphans!

We understand that some groups may have chosen to refrain from picking a sector, preferring to keep a free hand with regard to where their actions are staged. We know that people want to be useful and some are holding off on picking a location in hopes of being able to shore up weak points and fill gaps as actions begin. The time for that decision making is now. We urge anyone with the capacity to claim a sector in service of this broad collectively developed strategy.

We would like to take this moment to clarify and reiterate the responsibilities that come with adopting a sector. Adopting a sector revolves around being willing and able to coordinate organizations that are planning actions within the adopted sector and doing the work necessary to help them be successful. This means being willing to take on certain tasks. First and foremost you must be willing to talk to other people and groups, even those you didn’t previously know. Adopting organizations will have to have an open coordinating element. In such a role secrecy and paranoia must take a back seat to meaningful communication.

We are certainly NOT encouraging every affinity group to publicize its plans. Successful coordination requires striking a balance between security culture and accessibility. We feel that one of the strongest aspects of the strategy is that it provides avenues for public participation in complement to small privately coordinated affinity group actions

Additionally, organizations doing the coordinating must do all that they can to know their geography and timeline. The WC and allied organizations and individuals have worked to make information available concerning the layout and lowdown of the sectors. Read your sector packets, read the available intelligence. If you need more information about the street layout, the event timetable, delegate transport or any of the currently available intelligence, contact us and we will help you out. Knowledge is power.

If you cannot or will not fulfill these obligations but have publicly positioned yourself in a coordinating role we encourage you to be honest about your limitations and communicate them publicly so others are not counting on you for things you cannot provide.

Lastly, if you are not adopting a sector but have specific public intentions within the day one strategy please publicize them as soon as possible in the interest of giving a more accurate picture of the level of organizing going on around the RNC. We are confident that thousands are coming and that making the our strength public will encourage others to come forward and join in the fun.

Step it up,
the Welcoming Committee
