Adel Samara was born in the village of Beit Ur, near Ramallah, and received a Ph.D. in economics from Exeter University in 1987. He has written extensively in Arabic and English on topics that include Marxist theory, Third World economic development, womens liberation, Arab workers under Israeli occupation, the economy of hunger in the West Bank, globalization and its impact in the Middle East, and political Islam. He cofounded the Al Zahraa Research Center in Jerusalem in 1990, helped to found the Al Mashreq Center for Development and Cultural Studies in 1994, and is editor-in-chief of the Palestinian journal Kenaan.
Adel Samara has been arrested by three regimes Jordan, because he was active in the Palestinian Left; Israel, because of his active participation in the Palestinian resistance; and most recently, the Palestinian Authority, for signing the Petition of the Twenty in 1999, which criticized the Oslo accords and decried the Palestinian Authoritys widespread corruption and human rights abuses.
Co-sponsored by the Friends for a Democratic Palestine, Arab American Action Network, the Committee for a Democratic Palestine, and the Jerusalem Club.
