Eight activists were arrested near Chicago's goldcoast Nike store during a protest this afternoon against the corporation's unfair labor practices. Police allegedly arrested the protesters for 'violating a city ordinance against wearing masks'.

Attorneys providing the activists with legal support have stated that they have never heard of such a law on the city's books.

Eyewitnesses have reported that the police department's first district tactical unit appears to have initiated the arrests, which one witness described as a 'snatch and grab' operation. The protesters were reportedly standing on the sidewalk when an officer grabbed at cloth they had used to cover their faces, then moved with other officers to arrest the protesters, later telling them they were being arrested for violating the mysterious 'anti-mask' ordinance.

Protesters have been taken to the 18th District police station on west Chicago avenue. Activists have raised concerns about the arestees' safety, in light of what has been described as police officers' 'extremely aggressive' demeanor during the picket.

One stunned attorney noted that the rumored city ordinance effectively cancels peaceful -- and legal -- forms of public display that are much broader than the protests the 'ordinance' is likely designed to address.

"I've never heard of this ordinance, but this is really scary," commented Kate Walz of the legal assistance group First Defense. "What are they gonna do, outlaw Halloween?"
