PEOPLE’S CORE/ JFAV PARTICIPATES IN SUCCESSFUL 5K RUN AND FILIPINOTOWN FESTIVAL AUG.4- 5

he People’s Community Organization for Reform and Empowerment (People’s CORE) and the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) composed of Filipino World War II veterans and their advocates, ardently participates in the first Rotary Club of Historic Filipino 5 Kilometer Run Walk last August 5. The activities was capped by a 5-kilometer run on Sunday Aug.5 More than 400 runners and walkers participated on the event. City Council Member Wendy Gruel awarded the winners of the 5K Run/Walk chaired by Rotarian Donny Joaquin, the 5K Run/Walk Race Director. More than 20 veterans and youth acted as watchers along the route of the 5K run from Burlington/ Court street to Commonwealth/2nd Streets back to the finish line.

Los Angeles—The People’s Community Organization for Reform and Empowerment (People’s CORE) and the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) composed of Filipino World War II veterans and their advocates, ardently participates in the first Rotary Club of Historic Filipino 5 Kilometer Run Walk last August 5.

The activities was capped by a 5-kilometer run on Sunday Aug.5 More than 400 runners and walkers participated on the event. City Council Member Wendy Gruel awarded the winners of the 5K Run/Walk chaired by Rotarian Donny Joaquin, the 5K Run/Walk Race Director.

More than 20 veterans and youth acted as watchers along the route of the 5K run from Burlington/ Court street to Commonwealth/2nd Streets back to the finish line.

Later on the formal morning program, Cheri Gulke, author of the book. Valor, and the artist designer for the World War II memorial for Filipino veterans located in Lake St. Park presented to World War II veterans, the book.
JFAV Coordinator Commander and People’s CORE Board Member Peping Baclig received the books in behalf of the JFAV.

5th Historic Filipino town Festival -- A Success.

More than 1,500 people attended the two-day event from August 4 and 5. Hundreds of seniors and cultural dancers from the Silver lake Adult Health Care Center, FASGI and other groups opened the festivities after the interfaith ceremonies.

People’s CORE and JFAV, the alliance of veterans organizations and community and youth/student groups participated in the two days activities led by the Historic Filipino town Council, the GEPENC, Rotary Club of Historic Filipino town.

People’s CORE Eskrima/CQC institute also performed during the event on August 5. Eskrima master Chelin Navidad and Jason Yap gave a 15- minute exhibition of their prowess and the basic of Eskrima- the traditional Filipino stick-fighting techniques.

Earlier The Committee, a progressive Hip-Hop /Funk band with special guest BAMBU performed to the crowd fo 200 people on August 4, on the first day of the 2-day festival.

More than 20 youth volunteers gathered petitions during the 2-day festival that will be sent to the White House and the U.S. Congress before they adjourn on October 2007.

More than 400 people watched the performances at the HFT Festival of singer Kuh Ledesma, AJ Tabaldo of the “American Idol”, Joseph Gelito, Ivory Cunanan, Sarah Lazatin, Lara Avengonza and others.

This year, the Central Latin American group Proyekto Saludas also performed Colombian, Guamanian, Mexican, Hondurenian, and Nicagaraguan folk dancers. A mini Fashion show of Patrick Santa Ana and Armhand Remojo capped the event on August 5.
