Cindy Sheehan and 45 other people demanding that Congress move forward with Articles of Impeachment for George Bush and Dick Cheney were arrested by the Capitol police this afternoon in the halls of the Rayburn Building where they staged a sit-in.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of people carrying signs demanding impeachment and end to the Iraq war, marched over three miles from Arlington Cemetery to the Rayburn Building which houses the offices of members of the House of Representatives.

Prior to the arrest, Sheehan and others held a meeting with House Judiciary Chair John Conyers (Dem. from Michigan) about the need to initiate impeachment proceedings. The House Judiciary Committee is the panel that would first discuss Articles of Impeachment before they would be brought to the floor of the House of Representatives.

Sheehan and the Camp Casey Peace Institute had announced that more than one million people had signed petitions supporting impeachment. One large sign carried at the front of the march from Arlington Cemetery was a large blown up facsimile of an ImpeachBush.org petition with a banner splashed across the petition that read: 924,203 Have Voted to Impeach.

Cindy Sheehan's arrival at the House Rayburn building today was the culmination of a dramatic march that started in Crawford, Texas on July 10 and wound its ways throughout southern cities. Sheehan declared the trek to be a Journey for Humanity with the call for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

Sheehan has been posting a blog from the Journey for Humanity highlighting and explaining the various reasons that Bush and Cheney must be impeached for criminal actions, especially taking the country to war in Iraq based on lies. Her daily blog was posted at ImpeachBush.org.

"It is well past time for Congress to introduce articles of impeachment against Bush and other high officials," said constitutional rights attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a spokeswoman for ImpeachBush.org. "Impeachment is not an option, it is a constitutional requirement. Representatives are mandated by their oath of office to carry out their constitutional duties. This administration has violated the law of the land and international law, it has lied to the people of the United States. By allowing these actions to continue, Congress is complicit in the deaths of more Americans in Iraq and Iraqis every single day. The message of today's action is that there must be accountability for George W. Bush and for all who would aspire in the future to hold high office."
