Attacks kill 14 US troops in three days

Fourteen American soldiers have been killed in Iraq in the past three days, the US military said, taking the death toll for the month to 59.
The deaths raisedthe number of American troops who have died since the war began in 2003 to at least 3,545, according to the Associated Press.

The deadliest attack was a roadside bomb that struck a convoy in Baghdad yesterday, killing five US soldiers, three Iraqi civilians and one Iraqi interpreter, the military said.

In a separate attack yesterday, a grenade struck a vehicle in north Baghdad at about 12:30pm, killing one American soldier and wounding three others.

In northern Iraq, a suicide truck bomber struck the Sulaiman Bek city hall in a predominantly Sunni area, killing at least 16 people and wounding 67, an Iraqi commander said.

Maj-Gen Anwar Hama Amin said the mayor of the town had been the target and blamed the explosion on al-Qa'ida, saying it was the latest in a series of strikes by the terror network against government officials, whom they accuse of collaborating with the US and the Iraqi government.

Sulaiman Bek, south of Kirkuk, is near the border with Diyala province, where thousands of US troops are currently engaged in an offensive against insurgents.
