10:45 AM: DC Labor for Peace and Justice/USLAW
“BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW!”

he Iraq Commission has spoken. The President has spoken. Now it’s your turn to speak out on the war in Iraq. With buses coming from more than 30 states, Saturday’s anti-war rally in DC provides a chance to demonstrate the breadth of public opposition to the war in Iraq. Organized labor is shaping up to be the biggest organized contingent in Saturday’s march against the war, reports local organizer Denise Lombard. “We will be at the head of the march with military families and Iraq war veterans organizations against the war in front of us.” Local labor activists will gather at 10:45A at CWA and then march to join the main rally (see On The Line for details). “The weather is predicted to be 45 degrees and sunny!” adds Lombard. “Hang out with friends, get some exercise, and vote with your feet this Saturday to tell Congress: Bring the Troops Home Now!”

11:00 AM: Artists, Puppetistas, Noisemakers, Shakers and Movers - We need a BODY COUNT of who can committ to helping us with PUPPETS!! RSVP:: nbloch(at)igc.org

We will be meeting up with the Rhythm WOrkers Union and their MOther Drum SHip.
Proposed meeting place: ***THIS MAY CHANGE, please check in with us on Friday for up to the minute info!

LIKELY MEETING PLACE: From 11 AM until the march kicks off, find us on the mall, a bit west of the corner of Constitution Avenue and 4th Street, NW. Just follow the sound of the drums.
Dress warm, bring snacks, drinks!!

We will have a giant Red Devil puppet as well as a Goddess of Insurrection and Resistance!
It would be GREAT if you could dress either in Reds/Oranges/Black OR WHites/Yellows/Pale colors. We need more Red/Orange Devil minions !!

Here is a draft call to action about the Demo, with the DEVIL theme explained:

Does D.C. Smell of Sulfur?
On January 27, BEAT THE DEVIL with the Arts Bloc contingent of the UFPJ march on Washington!

The Washington Action Group (WAG) is calling on culture workers to join together in all of our diabolical (and anti-diabolic) madness to march in a theatrical bloc that will engage themes of a devilish nature, like: Will the Dems fail the test of satan and betray the anti-war vote that brought them to office? Could it be that Hugo Chavez actually saw the devil in Bush? Does D.C. need an exorcism? How can you beat the devil in YOU? How might the angel of light reveal the true forces behind the war?

WHAT WE WILL PROVIDE:
* 16 foot tall Devil puppet. * Some minion. * Stilt walkers. * A Goddess puppet.
WHAT WE NEED:
* Beats! How else will we 'Beat the Devil'?
* Flames! Let's make the Devil feel a false sense of comfort by wearing fire inspired
clothing (red, orange, yellow…) and bringing all the fire performers we know.
* Inventive characters that can play in to this dramatic struggle between good and evil in
times of war.

>From wikipedia:
The Devil is a title given to the supernatural entity, who, in Christianity, Islam, and certain
other faiths, is the most powerful evil entity and the tempter of humankind. God and the Devil are usually portrayed as fighting over the souls of humans, with the Devil seeking to lure people away from God and into hell. The Devil commands a force of lesser evil spirits, commonly known as demons. The Devil is destined to be destroyed at the end of this age, but not before he has led many humans, some say the vast majority, to perdition. The Devil is commonly associated with heretics, infidels, and other unbelievers.

11:00 AM: SDS Call to Action:
Student and Youth Call for mobilization during the Jan. 27 DC march.

On January 27th, United for Peace and Justice is organizing a mass demonstration in DC to end the war and bring the troops home. Howard Community College Students for a Democratic Society (HCC-SDS) calls upon all radical youth in the area to unite and ensure that our voice is heard. We believe that direct participation is necessary for a country to label itself a democracy, and this is not something we believe the Democrats will grant us with their new Congress. We must converge on the streets of DC to express our frustration with US global policy.

HCC-SDS is calling upon radical student/youth contingent to assemble at Dupont Circle at 11am on the day of the march.

11:00 AM: J27 Student Troops Out Now! Contingent in D.C.!

March in solidarity with students and youth from
across the country on Saturday January 27th in D.C. Join the Campus Anti-War Network (CAN), Members of SDS, and World Can't Wait in this Unified Youth and Student contingent.

The meeting place for the unified student and youth contingent will be on the steps of the Smithsonian Institute at 11 AM. It's the red brick building on the mall, next to Hirshorn, and near the Air and Space Museum. The address is 900 Jefferson Drive SW. For a visual representation please see the following link, note that the UFPJ rallying point is on the Mall between 3rd and 7th. The Smithsonian is right across the street, we will all congregate together and then head over to the rally as a strong and unified contingent.

[ maps.google.com/maps ]

The closest Metro strop is the "Smithsonian" Metro on the blue/orange lines. As you exit the metro you will probably be in the middle of a large demonstration (I believe it has two exists, one drops you off on Independence, the other in the middle of the park), and you can also check the street signs or ask anyone around for directions should you need them.

Iowa for example will be riding the Metro in from
Shady Grove and will be getting off at Gallery Place - Chinatown, which drops us off 6 blocks north of the mall on 7th street. Not a bad walk.

11:00 AM: Contingent for Justice in the Middle East: Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon

Gather at 11:00 AM at 9th and O Streets, NW
(Yellow Line: Mt Vernon Square/Convention Center at 7th and M Sts, or Green Line:
Shaw/Howard University at 8th and R Sts)
-March at 11:30 AM (1.4 miles) to our gathering point at the UFPJ rally at 4th St. and Constitution, NW (Yellow and Green line: Archives/Navy Memorial stop at 7th and Pennsylvania). You can also join us there.

We Demand:
-US out of the Middle East Now
-End Israeli Apartheid
-Stop US Aid to Israel
Connecticut United for Peace (CTUP), The Coalition for Justice and Accountability (D.C.), and Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East are calling for a national contingent to march against the occupation of Iraq, against the occupation of Palestine, against the attacks on Lebanon, against attacks and other aggressions on Iran and Syria, and for justice in all of the Middle East. We need to come together and mobilize in a loud, visible presence that links these attacks and raises our demands for JUSTICE.

This past year saw a massive escalation in the destruction unleashed by the United States and Israel on the Middle East:

*This year marked 655,000 Iraqis and over 3,000 US soldiers killed since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
*More than 600 Palestinians and 1,200 Lebanese killed by Israeli forces.
*A US veto against a United Nations Security Council resolution requiring Israel to cease its attacks.
*Billions of dollars in US aid given to Israel, including an emergency bomb shipment.
*Sanctions against the Palestinian Authority that have impoverished millions of Palestinians, especially in Gaza.

Israel has finally admitted to being the only country in the Middle East with a nuclear arsenal. Moreover, Bush has proposed a major escalation in Iraq and implied possible war on Iran and Syria.

Clearly, Israeli aggression is supported by the US, and is closely tied to the illegal occupation of Iraq and larger U.S. strategies for regional hegemony. The anti-war movement must make these connections apparent if peace and justice is ever to be brought to the region and to the world.

We invite everyone who wants a Middle East free of injustices and oppression to march with us on Jan 27th.

5:00 PM: IRAQ: The Logic of Withdrawl. Join Anthony Arnove as he discusses and signs his latest book - now available in paperback.

Who: ANTHONY ARNOVE is a writer, editor and activist. He has worked alongside Howard Zinn as editor of Voices of a People's History of the United States. Arnove is also the editor of Iraq Under Siege: The Deadly Impact of Sanctions and War and Terrorism and War, a collection of post-9/11 interviews. He serves on the editorial board of The International Socialist Review and has written for numerous publications including Financial Times, The Nation, In These Times, Monthly Review and Z Magazine.

Where: Busboys and Poets (in the Langston Room)
2021 14th Street NW Washington DC 20009
What: Join Anthony Arnove, author of IRAQ: The Logic of Withdrawl as he discusses and signs his latest book.

In IRAQ: The Logic of Withdrawl Anthony Arnove argues that the U.S. occupation is the major source of instability and suffering for the Iraqi people, challenging the idea that George W. Bush was ever interested in bringing democracy to Iraq. It also lays out a clear vision for building a movement to bring the troops home.

Almost four years after the start of the war in Iraq, violence and misery continue to plague the country, and conservatives and liberals alike are struggling with the question of when — and under what circumstances — U.S. and coalition forces should leave. IRAQ: The Logic of Withdrawl is published by Metropolitan Books.
