CHICAGO, Jan. 9 (IMC) - Verbal exchanges between Argentine Consul General Cristina Vallina and a local protestors coaliton resulted in the Consulate agreeing to fax a list of demands to the Argentine government and to inquire about the release of Argentinian street protestors.

At the protestors' request Vallina invited Dawn Roberts of the Chicago Direct Action Network (DAN) and a videographer to accompany her as she prepared and faxed the demands to Argentina.

Cliff Willmeng, also of the Chicago DAN, stated that protestors worldwide were instructed to occupy Argentine embassies in solidarity with the people of Argentina. Calls from the country's citizens have urged the establishing of workers control over factories and governmental services throughout Latin America.

Kirsten Roberts (no relation) of the International Socialist Organization questioned Vallina's position as official representative of the people of Argentina.

"How can you tell people you represent them when people are in the streets?" she asked. Roberts indicated that Vallina had a choice between supporting the interim president or resigning her position in acknowledgement of the government's political bankruptcy.

Argentinian street demonstrations estimated in the hundreds of thousands erupted throughout the country on December 19 forcing President Fernando de la Rúa to resign and flee by helicopter from the Pink Palace. Police officers ended the lives of 21 people nationwide, with an unknown number arrested during the outgoing president's one-day declared state of siege.

Protestors are demanding justice for people killed by Argentine forces, the release of protestors and the end of International Monetary Fund control over the country's finances.

The coalition cheered and chanted "Argentina / ¡El Pueblo!" as they descended elevators and left the building which houses the consulate.
