On March 16 of 2003, our sister and comrade,
Rachel Corrie was murdered by Israeli Defense Forces as she attempted to prevent an illegal home demolition in Rafah, Gaza.
The weapon used to crush her to death is the same weapon used by the Israeli military for illegal home, agriculture, and infrastructure demolitions throughout occupied Palestine: a
CATERPILLLAR D9 bulldozer.
Since 1967, the Israeli army has used CAT equipment, including specially modified D9 and D10 bulldozers, to
destroy over 12,000 homes in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, leaving tens of thousands of men, women and children homeless.
The Israeli army has continued bulldozing homes even when notified that residents were still inside the targeted homes. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in these instances, such as
Nabila al-Shu'bi, who was seven-months pregnant, as well as her three young children and four additional members of her family, all of whom were left to die under the rubble of their Nablus home when it was bulldozed on April 6, 2002.
CAT builds and sells bulldozers to Israel for the explicit purpose of the destruction of homes and agricultural tracts, which allows for the construction of illegal settlements and the erection of an
illegal separation barrier on Palestinian land.
CAT has been rebuked by the
UN High Commission on Human Rights,
Amnesty International, and
Human Rights Watch for its role in facilitating and profiting from Israel’s human rights violations using CAT equipment.
CAT bulldozers are funded by US military aid to Israel – which is paid for by the US taxpayer.
