Democracy Now! Is Coming To CAN TV

Award-winning journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzales headline Democracy Now! premiering on Chicago television via Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV). This national, independent
news hour provides daily access to people and
perspectives rarely heard on commercial news outlets. Coverage of national and world-wide news will be featured weekdays from 7 - 8 a.m. on cable channel CAN TV19 starting February 15, 2006.

Democracy Now! provides hard-hitting, breaking coverage of war and peace, investigative reports, exclusive interviews, and on-the-ground correspondence from protests and hot-spots around the world. The news hour features in-depth interviews with independent and international journalists, analysts, and ordinary people who are directly affected by U.S. domestic and
foreign policy. In addition, Democracy Now! hosts real debates - debates between people who substantially disagree, such as between the White House or the Pentagon spokespeople on the one hand, and grassroots activists on the other.

Nationally syndicated Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page says, "I love Democracy Now! because it enables me to hear important voices, ideas and points of view that I am not hearing anywhere else in the clutter and fog of Washington's chattering classes. I only regret that I cannot hear it in every city to which I travel. Amid all the information I absorb ravenously every day, Democracy Now! helps to give me some needed balance."

The premiere of this newscast in Chicago is made possible through a cooperative effort between CAN TV, Chicago Instructional Technology Foundation (CITF), Chicago Media Action (CMA), and Free
Speech TV. CITF is a non-profit corporation contributing to the education of students in the Chicago area by providing instructional programming that reflects the diversity of the human experience. CMA is a media activist group dedicated to analyzing and broadening
Chicago's mainstream media while building and strengthening the city's independent media. Free Speech TV is the nation's leading progressive television network. It is seen full-time on DISH Network and local cable channels, reaching approximately 25 million households.

CAN TV provides coverage of events relevant to the local community and gives every Chicagoan a voice on cable television by providing video training, facilities, equipment, and channel time for Chicago residents and nonprofit groups. CAN TV~Rs five local, noncommercial cable channels CAN TV19, 21, 27, 36 and 42 reach more than one million viewers.
