(directions below)

On May 26th, 2004, animal rights activists were indicted under the "Animal Enterprise Protection Act" (AEPA).

These folks are not charged with taking anything, breaking anything, trespassing or physical violence of any kind. They are not charged with anything except for speech---a website, www.shacamerica.net.

Charged under the AEPA, for which they face millions in fines and up to 23 years in jail, the government is prosecuting not only the actions of these individuals, but also their ideology.

In this test case the government is arguing that the group's aim was to close down a lab, and closing down a lab would be a disruption of an animal enterprise as prohibited by the AEPA. What's really on trial is animal rights. If the government is successful only welfarist reforms will be allowed and abolition will be outlawed!

The SHAC defendants are:
Jake Conroy
Darius Fullmer
Lauren Gazzola
Josh Harper
Kevin Jonas
Andy Stepanian

We know New Jersey is a long way away, but we urge you to come out to show your support for the activists and your opposition to the Animal Enterprise Protection Act. If you are driving from the Chicago area are going and have extra seats or if you are looking for a ride, please e-mail animalrightschicago (at) riseup.net so we can attempt to get as many people from Chicago out to this important event as possible.

"First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me." -Pastor Martin Niemller
