OPEN UNIVERSITY OF THE LEFT

Open University of the Left presents on Saturday October 29, 2:00PM at Acme Art Works, 1741 N. Western Ave. Chicago. After the Storm: Hurricane Katrina & the State of Black America
Writer and activist Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor will make a presentation on the impact of hurricane Katrina on both Black America and on Black politics. What is behind the recent "discovery" of racism and poverty by politicians and the mass media? What are the prospects for a new political alternative away from the destructive direction of this country? These are just a few of the questions to be raised. The presenter has been involved in struggles against the death penalty and police brutality as well as the fight for gay marriage. She is active with the Chicago ISO and works as a tenent rights advocate for the Illinois Tenents Union. She is the author of Civil Rights and Civil Wrongs: Racism in America Today, published in the International Socialist Review. Her writings have also appeared online in CounterPunch.
