Chicago Women Speak Out: Stop "Entertainment" Violence Against Women

Violence Against Women Awareness Month Concludes with Protest
Chicago -- October 28, 2005 -- A group of Chicago women concerned over the increase in portrayals of violence against women on television will gather for a vigil in front of the Chicago FOX studios, 205 North Michigan Avenue, at noon October 28 and then continue the vigil at CBS.

Some of the women are mothers concerned for their daughters' futures. They are all activists angry at seeing women be hunted, tortured, raped, and killed for our entertainment.

"Not only do graphic depictions of violence against women reinforce women's role as victim, but it also enforces the role of men as violent perpetrators. These stereotypes hinder our
ability to raise girls and boys to see themselves as strong, yet caring individuals." said Ann Breen-Greco, an administrative law judge and mother to two daughters.

"Not only are the networks greenlighting more television shows depicting violence against women, but the level of violence is escalating. Sadistic behavior has become routine," said Christine Cupaiuolo, a freelance writer who covered women and popular culture for Ms. Magazine. "This daily diet of rape and torture is offensive on multiple levels. It's the ultimate portrayal of
women's passivity, and it reveals the networks' refusal to recognize women as little more than victims or sex objects."

"Raising our daughters to know that violence is wrong will not bring about an end to violence against women. Parents must address the issue
with their sons if we are to make any real change," said Veronica I. Arreola, former board member of Chicago NOW and mother to a daughter.

Judith Erickson, a teacher and mother of three adult daughters and three grand daughters advocates an end to portraying violence as exciting or glamorous: "All of us know someone who is a survivor of violence. Sadly, some of us knew women who did not survive their violent situation. For them, we stand up and demand that our airwaves stop being used to perpetuate violence against women."
