Casa Guatemala is sponsoring an "educational tour" for Elvia Sanchez a representative of Ta Spol Be, a grassroots education-promotion organization in Chiapas, Mexico.
Due to the current situation in the Mexican state of Chiapas, children in the community of Polhó have not had access to education since April of 1997 when the federal government pulled out the 19 teachers in the area. There are currently 2,030 children in the community, none of which have had a single day of school since 1997.
As an act of solidarity, and because we deem education to be a duty of us all, Ta Spol Be - Building a Path, has become engaged in sponsoring a group of volunteers all of whom are education professionals. These volunteers are currently in Polhó teaching, and training people from the community to become bilingual teachers.
Casa Guatemala is sponsoring an "educational tour" for Elvia Sanchez a representative of Ta Spol Be. Ms. Sanchez will speak of ongoing education promotion in the conflict-ridden Mexican state of Chiapas, as well as the ongoing peace process between indigenous rebels of the EZLN (Zapatista Army for National Liberation) and the Mexican government.
This event will also feature the renowned Mayan marimba musical ensemble: "Konojel Junam", celebrated local Mexican poet Rogelio Olguin as well as Latin American food, drink and a huge selection of Guatemalan and Mexican folkloric arts and crafts for sale (just in time for xmas). Donation: $6.00.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Inspiration Café, an organization that provides free meals to homeless people in Chicago, Casa Guatemala and the Ta Spol Be -Building a Path - Education Initiative in Chiapas Mexico.
THE EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2000, 7PM, INSPIRATION CAFÉ, 4554 N. BROADWAY, 2nd FLOOR, CHICAGO
